Brenda’s Story
Brenda, a 30-year-old mother with a disability and anxiety, felt trapped in an abusive relationship, fearing for her and her toddler’s safety – and wondering how she’d survive without her partner’s health benefits. When child protective services became involved, Brenda realized she needed help. With support from The Alex, she entered a domestic violence shelter, where she and her child found safety, counseling, and transitional care.
Alex staff helped Brenda access medical coverage, apply for AISH, and secure subsidized housing. With financial stability through AISH and the child tax benefit, she was able to start over, safe, supported, and independent. She worked closely with child protection services, and her child remained in her care.
Brenda continues to rely on The Alex as her medical home, accessing Peer Support and Social Workers when needed. Her story is one of courage, resilience, and the power of compassionate, wraparound care.
