The Alex Community Food Centre
We are excited that The Alex and Community Food Centres Canada (CFCC) are working together to develop Calgary’s first Community Food Centre (CFC), which will complement The Alex’s existing community health programs.
The CFC will be a welcoming space that will bring people together to grow, cook, share and advocate for good food in a dignified setting. People will learn cooking and gardening skills, and kids get their hands dirty in both the garden and the kitchen while learning that healthy can be delicious. The CFC will support people with peer advocacy services, empower community members to find their voices on the issues that matter to them, and help people find friends and support. The centre will offer multifaceted, integrated, responsive and prevention-focused programming in a shared space where food builds health, hope, skills and community.
CFCC is a national organization that’s driving the development of CFCs across the country. Along with other CFCs in Perth, Stratford, Toronto, Winnipeg and Dartmouth, Calgary’s first Community Food Centre will help to increase access to healthy food for low-income Canadians while proving that food can be a transformative force in our communities.
