The Foothills Breastfeeding Clinic, located in The Alex Community Health Centre, provides breastfeeding support to new mothers, fathers and babies. The clinic is staffed by doctors who are International Board-Certified Lactation Consultants.
Clients can be referred to the clinic by a physician, public health nurse, or lactation consultant – or they can self-refer. Clients must have a valid Alberta Health Care card and be breastfeeding or pumping to feed baby expressed milk.
Initial appointments at the clinic will include an assessment to determine a client’s breastfeeding concerns (low supply, poor latch, tongue tie, etc). Mom will nurse the baby at the appointment and the baby will be weighed before and after the feeding. Using the weights, doctors can determine how much milk the baby is taking during a feeding. Follow-up appointments are scheduled as necessary to address any concerns that are identified.
