#Giving Tuesday and The Alex SMILES Dental Clinic – The Gift That Keeps Giving!
“A smile is the curve that sets everything straight.” Phyllis Diller
Most people know about Black Friday and Cyber Monday…now Giving Tuesday is coming to Canada on December 3, 2013. The Alex is a partner charity in this innovative initiative harnessing the power of social media and the generosity of people to bring about real change in their community!
We are asking for your help to fuel our Dental Health Bus (DHB) as it visits high need elementary schools putting a smile on the face of kids struggling with untreated dental disease. We know that dental illness in kids negatively affects their performance in school, their ability to focus or participate fully in sports and social events and too often leads to social isolation – that’s why we’ve partnered with local Calgary school boards to change the future for high-risk students. These students include kids from low-socio economic households where parents often have to make the difficult decision of seeing a dentist or paying the bills. Let’s make sure that this isn’t a decision that parents have to make this season or any season.
No child should struggle with tooth-pain and untreated disease and we are calling on you to help us not only put a smile back on the face of the children we serve but to help us restore their health and their self-esteem.
Stephen’s Backpacks Stepping up for Vulnerable Calgary Youth
On November 29th between 12:30PM and 1:30PM a passionate group of volunteers with Stephen’s Backpacks from Airdrie will arrive at The Alex Youth Health Centre (YHC) at 1116 Centre Street NE. The volunteers will share a message of hope and seasonal gifts with vulnerable and street-connected youth who find themselves faced with poverty or homelessness this holiday season. Feel free to come down and join in the festivities or to drop off a gift donation for a youth in need.

This winter we encourage you to give the gift of change. Shopping with a purpose can make a real difference in the life of a family, youth, individual or senior this holiday season. Choosing between putting food on the table or paying the rent should never be a choice people have to make – help us ensure that it’s not. Our gifting catalogue allows you the opportunity to gather with family, friends or co-workers and pay it forward. Gifts of hope, survival, health and dignity are ours to give, our shopping catalogue allows you to select a gift while making sure it goes to helping someone in need have a hopeful holiday season.

What’s in a Name
What’s in a Name, our Signature Awareness Campaign has launched. In partnership with XL103 and AMP 90.3 radio we are giving voice and a name to our vulnerable neighbours. At The Alex we understand that those we serve are not numbers in a system – they are mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters, veterans and individuals whose stories and circumstances are as unique as the service we provide. It is their stories that inspired us to start a conversation with Calgarians. To join the conversation you can follow us on Twitter or Facebook. To find out what your name means or what The Alex means visit http://www.thealex.ca/ and check out our What’s in a Name app!

Sponsor Energy’s Community Partners Program
There is a new power retailer in Alberta and they are energizing Alberta-based charities by donating half of their profits in support of our community. When you sign up with Sponsor Energy, half of the profits from each kilowatt of power you use will be donated to your charity of choice – monthly. By selecting The Alex you will help us power our mobile health fleet this winter. Choosing between paying for utilities and buying food should never be a choice but too often, when the bills rack up, it can be the difference between sustaining or losing housing. We all have the power to affect change!
